The path to spiritual awareness

The word esoteric comes from Greek and means ‘inner’, as esotericism was originally only intended for a select, small group of people. Another definition is the inner, spiritual path to awareness or understanding. Today various occult and mystical teachings are associated with esotericism and the word is used as a general term for a number of world views.

My hobby is often met with disbelieving glances from acquaintances, friends or family, who say ‘Don't believe that nonsense!’ I've often wondered why that might be, and I've come to the conclusion that it's because a lot of people only know about the fortune tellers who appear on TV with their tarot cards or crystal balls to tout their ‘psychic abilities’. Or perhaps they've come across a soothsayer who read their palm in a carnival tent – but they've never given any consideration to what lies hidden behind these shows, or what can be achieved through the power of positive thought.
